Bogaerts homers among 4 hits as Padres beat Dodgers 5-3 to avoid four-game sweep
Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — Xander Bogaerts homered among his four hits and scored three runs, and the San Diego Padres beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 on Thursday night to avoid a four-game sweep. Rookie Ryan Bergert gave up three hits in 4 2/3 scoreless innings in his fourth career start, and Adrian Morejon (4-3) followed with four consecutive outs. Jake Cronenworth had three hits. After Dodgers right-hander Jack Little — making his major league debut — hit Fernando Tatis Jr. with a pitch in the ninth inning, both benches emptied behind home plate but no punches were thrown. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and Padres manager Mike Shildt were ejected. Padres reliever Robert Suarez hit Shohei Ohtani with a pitch in the bottom of the ninth and was ejected. Tatis and Ohtani were each hit by pitches twice in the series. Right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto (6-6) gave up three runs and seven hits over 6 1/3 innings as Los Angeles snapped a five-game winning streak. Bogaerts gave the Padres a 1-0 lead in the second inning with his fourth home run and first since May 14. They went up 2-0 in the fifth inning on Jose Iglesias had a sacrifice fly in the fifth, and Cronenworth an RBI double in the seventh. Gavin Sheets added an RBI single and Iglesias drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 5-0 in the eighth. The Dodgers ended the shutout bid with three runs in the ninth and had the tying run at second base before rookie Dalton Rushing struck out against Yuki Matsui, who picked up his first save. Rays pitcher carted off field and taken to hospital after foul ball into dugout hits him in face
Associated Press TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Rays pitcher Hunter Bigge was carted off the field in a frightening scene and taken to a hospital after getting struck in the face by a foul ball lined into the Tampa Bay dugout Thursday night. Bigge was placed on a backboard and gave a thumbs up before being driven by ambulance to a nearby hospital for tests. He never lost consciousness and was able to converse with first responders, Rays manager Kevin Cash said. In the top of the seventh inning, Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman sharply pulled a pitch into the Tampa Bay dugout on the first base side and the ball hit Bigge, a 27-year-old right-hander currently on the injured list. Emergency medical personnel quickly arrived to attend to Bigge. After several quiet minutes, as visibly concerned Rays players knelt in the field, Bigge was loaded onto a stretcher and carted off. After the game, Cash said Bigge was struck in the face. The ball left Rutschman's bat at 105 mph, according to Statcast. Bigge, on the 15-day injured list with a lat strain, received a standing ovation from the Steinbrenner Field crowd as he was loaded onto a cart. The game resumed after an eight-minute delay, and Baltimore held on for a 4-1 victory. Bigge was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 12th round of the 2019 amateur draft from Harvard and made his major league debut for them on July 9 last year. He was traded 19 days later to Tampa Bay along with Christopher Morel and minor leaguer Ty Johnson for All-Star third baseman Isaac Paredes. In 32 career appearances, including one start, Bigge has a 2.51 ERA and one save. This season, he has a 2.40 ERA in 13 relief outings covering 15 innings. ___ AP MLB: recommended

Club World Cup stunner! Champions League winner PSG loses to Brazil's Botafogo
Botafogo stunned Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 on Thursday night in each club's second match of the Club World Cup. Igor Jesus scored late in the first half, and the South American champions made it stand up through a tense second half while moving atop the group at 2-0-0. PSG hadn't lost in any competition since May 3, but the European champions looked understandably weary at times before a lively Rose Bowl crowd of 53,699. Jesus' stunning score in the 36th minute was the first goal allowed since May 17 by PSG, which routed Atlético Madrid 4-0 last Sunday in Pasadena. The French powerhouse had outscored its last three opponents by a combined 12-0, winning the French Cup and the Champions League final along the way. Ballon d'Or contender Ousmane Dembele missed his second straight game for PSG with a quadriceps injury. His teammates still dominated possession in the first half, even though coach Luis Enrique rotated his starting lineup. Everything came undone with the remarkable individual effort by Jesus, the Brazilian striker reportedly headed for Nottingham Forest next season. "That's why I say the graveyard in football is full of favorites. It was really about believing in ourselves. ... We played a match that was almost perfect, technically speaking. There were really no opportunities for PSG. We had a lot of team spirit, and I was saying backstage that we won this match making PSG taste their own poison, because we were what PSG has been for some time, which is a real team," said Botafogo coach Renato Paiva. PSG finished with 16 shot attempts to Botafogo's four — but all four were on target, whereas PSG only got two on net. "I think it's normal. This competition is very intense and difficult. Every team is motivated, especially against our team. I think sometimes our team struggled against their defense. I think Botafogo is one of the toughest defensive teams in the tournament," said Luis Enrique. Jesus controlled Jefferson Savarino's long pass, outmaneuvered two defenders and thumped a shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma. He leaped over a barrier and up onto the front row of the Rose Bowl stands to celebrate with Botafogo's ecstatic supporters. PSG had little of the sublime connective play that characterized its stellar run over the past month, but Luis Enrique's club is still in strong position to advance as it travels to play MLS side Seattle Sounders. Thousands of boisterous Brazilian fans made the trip to celebrate one of the most remarkable victories in Botafogo's storied history.
